Georgia on My Mind!

♥ Family Love ♥

The past few days have been extremely busy, but so productive! A few weeks ago, a current GA-PCOM medical student posted on SDN that they were looking to rent out their townhouse, and I was lucky enough to see it and respond right when it was posted. Since it was Mardi Gras weekend and my daughter did not have to return to school until today, I decided this past weekend would be the best time to take the drive to Georgia and check it out. Not only is the house perfect for me, but it is literally less than half a mile from the school I will be attending! So needless to say, the lease has been signed and I will be moving in on July 1st :-) He also gave me some really good advice about classes and threw in a couple of anatomy and dissection books. I am just so happy that I no longer have to worry about looking for a place to live, and I’m even more excited to be renting from a fellow medical student and an extremely nice person.

I can’t visit Georgia without seeing family, so I also took the time to do some bonding with my little brother and sister. They were raving about a restaurant called Caper’s and their toasted strawberry pound cake, so that’s where we went. It was so good! My daughter was also excited to visit her cousins from her father’s side of the family, so I let her spend the night with them on Saturday. I have a feeling there will be plenty of weekend sleepovers at my place, but I’m not mad at that! Playtime with friends and family equals more uninterrupted study time for me.

I think that pretty much sums up my weekend. We made it back Monday night and had planned on staying in New Orleans to go to the parade yesterday morning, but the weather forecast was thirty degrees with rain. I’m just now getting over being sick and I don’t do well with cold weather, so we decided not to go. I’m just glad that I got a chance to take my daughter to a parade this year.

But overall, I am pretty much squared away on the school end of things. Not only did I find a place to live, but I also mailed in my final deposit, completed my FAFSA, and turned in my medical history questionnaire and titer results. It turns out that I did my TB test too early, so I will have to get it re-done within two months before school starts. Fortunately the school offers this for free, so I will just wait until I make the move out there. Right now I think the only things I have not completed are the background check and scholarship application, but the school will be notifying everyone when they become available. Other than that, only five more months to go until I’m officially a medical student, and I can’t wait!

  1. Hey D! Congrats on finding a home! I absolutely LOVE PCOM-GA and had to debate real hard about whether to move here to Texas or Swuanee, Georgia specifically because of PCOM. I'm sure it's going to be a great experience for you!

    1. Thank you! If you don't mind me asking, what made you choose Texas?

    2. I had a number of reasons for choosing Texas: 1) Tuition costs, 2) Numerous med school/PhD options, 3) Big cities with high populations of undeserved populations/Cultural diversity, 5) Lower cost of living with Big City advantages, 6) Presence of major Cancer Centers 6) Not far from beaches. That's all I can think of for now, needless to say I feel I've made a VERY good decision! :)

    4. @Doc201X Those are some great reasons! I thought about applying to schools in Texas, but their in-state bias is strong! Congrats to you on finding a place that had everything you needed and wanted :-)

    6. You're right about the in-state bias in Texas. But it only takes a year and a complete transition to all things Texas (ie license, tags, home ownership, ect) to be considered a resident. Plus my daughter will be attending college in Texas starting this summer, so it's a win-win for her too!!

  2. D! Congrats to you for making it so far, I'm so glad i stumbled upon your blog. I have read through some of your entries and it really helps to read how successful you have been and keep fighting for what you really want.
I wanted to be a doctor for a long time too, but honestly i never believed in myself enough. Now that I have a Bachelor in Management (figured to go with where i could make a career out of) I'm not happy with working for Corporate America and babysit grown adults.
I always wanted to help people, study medicine and that feeling never went away.
Now I'm trying to find out how to turn things around and make the right moves - I'm 29 years young (! ;)) and probably start with a post bacc "degree" to make up for all the classes I haven't taken yet. (Biology, Chemistry, etc.) The problem I have to figure out is how to stay afloat financially. But where there is a will, there is a way.
I will definitely keep reading your blog!

    1. Thank you, Zue! I'm happy that you have decided to face your fears and pursue something that is in your heart. The good news is that you haven't previously taken the science pre-reqs, so you can really shine on that. If finances are a problem, you could most likely take out loans and try looking into a few scholarships as well. Thank you so much for reading, and I wish you much success in your future endeavors :-)
